Welcome to

St Benedicts in Glastonbury

Opened in 1984, St Benedicts has 60 bedrooms in two separate units. The Vicarage provides residential and nursing care while The Deanery houses our dementia nursing unit.

All our bedrooms are a comfortable size and tastefully decorated, and many are ensuite. Specialist toilet and shower facilities are provided.

The lounges and dining rooms are spacious and comfortable, and our patio area enjoys all-day sun in the warmer months.

Our residents are cared for respectfully in a warm and safe environment, benefitting from excellent professional working relationships with our multidisciplinary team of GPs, social workers, district nurses and, of course, friends and family members.

We also offer the opportunity for respite and short stay care, should you need a break from caring for yourself or for a loved one.

Activities

Activities

We want to ensure that the people we support at St Benedicts have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so our activities programme is created with the interests of each resident in mind. We have two activities coordinators who ensure each resident is offered daily stimulation to suit their interests and needs.

We are very lucky in Glastonbury to be surrounded by talented musicians and performers who entertain our residents and staff throughout the year.

Nutrition

Nutrition

Our experienced kitchen team serves locally sourced, home-cooked food. Each day’s menu is displayed in the dining rooms and discussed daily with every resident to ascertain their choices. Special attention is given to any individual dietary needs.

We celebrate every resident’s birthday with a home-baked cake and we take any opportunity to put on a themed menu to mark special occasions, from St Patrick’s Day to Burns Night.

Facilities

Facilities

St Benedicts operates a daily laundry service and we provide clean linen and towels every day. The local newsagent delivers the daily papers. Local church ministers visit us regularly and we host a small service where residents can receive Holy Communion.

Our hairdresser is at St Benedicts twice a week and makes use of our purpose-built salon on the ground floor in The Vicarage. Our beautician performs manicures once a week.

Ann Barclay, Registered Manager

Ann originally trained to become a Registered Nurse at the Charing Cross Hospital in Fulham, qualifying in 1986, and worked across a range of disciplines before relocating to Somerset in 2003. She joined us full-time in 2008.

"I realised how much I enjoyed working in a nursing home environment and making a difference to the residents living there - I so love hearing our residents laughing. For me the key is dignity, independence, respect for our residents – and having them enjoy their lives."

When not at work, Ann enjoys walking her dog, running, swimming, eating “posh nosh”, spending time in Cornwall and travelling around the UK in her VW camper van, holidays abroad, watching F1 racing and birds, and watercolour painting.

Peter Hansraj, Deputy Manager

Peter has worked in the care sector for 37 years, both with the NHS and in the private mental health sector.

“Dementia care is a specialism which is less well understood than many, and it’s a condition for which there is currently no cure, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make an important difference to the lives of those we support. Every day is a learning opportunity, both for myself and the rest of my colleagues: we learn from each other and we learn from the residents. It’s such a rewarding environment.”

Outside work Peter enjoys gardening, the company of his ginger cat Lego, travelling and keeping abreast of world news. He and his wife, a counsellor and occupational therapist, have two adult children, currently both at university.
