Colleagues at St Benedict’s Nursing Home have been celebrating the breadth of their cultural backgrounds with a special foodie ‘bring and share’ event at the home.

The team includes individuals who come from the UK, the Philippines, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Romania and India, all with expertise in caring for vulnerable elderly people which reflects their cultural background as well as the values of the White Care Group for whom they work.

Operations manager Philip White said: “We are so lucky to have a team that comes from an amazing mix of cultures and backgrounds.

“Many of them come from parts of the world where multi-generational households are the norm, and they bring with them a deep-rooted respect and love for elderly which they demonstrate every day in the fantastic care they give our residents.

“We decided to hold the staff ‘bring and share’ event as a celebration of everyone’s family favourites foods featuring dishes they enjoy and were enthusiastic to share with their colleagues.

“Everyone contributed and it was a real pleasure to be able to sample and share such a variety of authentic home-cooked recipes.

“We always try to ensure that mealtimes at St Benedict’s are relaxed and enjoyable events for our residents, so it was really nice to have this staff-focused foodie celebration.

“As well as the ‘bring and share’ meal being an intrinsically joyful event, a happy team helps ensure a happy homeful of residents, so everybody benefits.”

The day’s menu included: chilli pork; chicken biryani; prawn madras; South Indian snacks, fritters and dessert; coconut fried rice and soft chicken; banana fry; Filipino chicken noodles; Jollof rice (a spicy, one-pot West African rice dish with tomatoes and onions); stuffed peppers; tripe and kale stew served with maize meal pap or ‘sadza’; Romanian cold meat and cheese platter; scones clotted cream and jam.
